A multitude of drawbacks exist to these largely obsolete systems that leads to contamination of the groundwater table as well as rivers, oceans and other natural water bodies. The economic burden of maintaining these traditional systems is huge and not sustainable for most municipalities. Several international studies have proven that the cost of DEWATS is anywhere between three to ten times cheaper to implement and operate depending on existing sewer infrastructure. When used in combination with an existing sewer system, processed water is flushed into the sewer, which then acts as an underground irrigation system, leaching the clean water into the ground thus replenishing dwindling groundwater levels. Current waste management throughout most of the world relies on Roman style sewer systems that carry waste from populated areas to waste treatment facilities or disposal sites. It is estimated that in excess of 2-million wastewater lift stations exist in the US. They form a critical part of the overall water and wastewater pumping systems and bring the waste discharged from residential and commercial sources into the sewer system to the treatment plant. Lift stations are rarely thought of until one stops working properly and a spill or backup occurs. As an example, in the city of Seattle, Washington it is estimated that 544,000 gallons of grease slip down the city's drains each month with most of it coming from dirty dishes and food waste. Nearly one in four households in the United States depends on an individual septic system or small community cluster system to treat their wastewater. Onsite wastewater systems include a wide range of individual and cluster treatment systems that process household and commercial sewage. An estimated 10 to 20% of these systems malfunction each year, causing pollution to the environment and creating a risk to public health. As well as being unreliable they produce foul odors, pollute the ground water table and require large leach fields. Lack of maintenance is probably the main reason for the high malfunction rate with owners installing them and then forgetting about them.

On a large industrial scale this separation process is not efficient and the oil and gas industry is left with huge quantities of produced oily water containing chemicals used in the separation process. Current disposal methods require transportation of produced water from offshore to land for injection into dry oil wells. Significant impairment of existing ground water sources and regulations have become more stringent with dry oil wells being placed far from populated areas and drinking water wells becoming increasingly scarce. Using CleanBlu® containerized systems will, at least in part, solve this problem by bioremediating the oil content in the produced water. Substantial cost savings are expected while providing a sustainable solution for the safe disposal of produced water.

Traditionally, in established regions wastewater is managed using a network of sewer systems, lift stations and large central treatment plants. A multitude of drawbacks exist to these largely obsolete systems that leads to contamination of the groundwater table as well as rivers, oceans and other natural water bodies. The economic burden of maintaining these traditional systems is huge and not sustainable for most municipalities. Hybrid DEWATS for Ship Bilge Systems

Water that does not drain off the side of the deck drains down through the ship into the bilge. This water may be from rough seas, rain, leaks in the hull or stuffing box, or other interior spillage. The collected water must be pumped out to prevent the bilge from becoming too full and threatening to sink the ship. Depending on the ship's design and function, bilge water may contain oil, urine, detergents, solvents, chemicals, pitch, particles, and other materials. Bioremediation of bilge water has become a common practice by adding microbes to the bilge. However due to the lack of oxygen and recirculation, simply adding microbes produces poor results. Installation of a CleanBlu® hybrid DEWATS into the bilge compartment eliminates build up of noxious water and produces clean water allowing safe disposal into the ocean. Naturally occurring microbes already present in the wastewater are recirculated in the "activated sludge" and then pumped through the plant in an effort to bioremediate the wastewater. CleanBlu® has considerable experience in soil decontamination and after Germany's reunification in 1990 decontaminated more than 600,000 tons of contaminated soil in former East Germany. Contaminants range from diesel to heavy metals to PCB's and dioxins. Various methods for soil cleaning exist, however, our system washes the soil with air and a specially formulated surfactant (detergent) in highly modified dumpster trucks at a rate of 40 ton/hour, per system. The resulting wash-water contains contaminants and requires processing before disposal. To address this need, CleanBlu® developed its Bio-Reactor systems in the late 1980's, which processed these complex waste streams on-site relieving the need for costly transportation. Agriculture is a major user of ground and surface water in the United States, accounting for approximately 80 percent of the Nation's consumptive water use and over 90 percent in many Western States. The continuous and alarming overdrawing of ground water has not only put agricultural water use in peril but has left many farmers with water that is increasingly unusable for crop irrigation. Salinity from irrigation can occur over time wherever irrigation occurs, since almost all water (even natural rainfall) contains some dissolved salts. When plants use the water, the salts are left behind in the soil and eventually begin to accumulate. Since soil salinity makes it more difficult for plants to absorb soil moisture, these salts must be leached out of the plant root zone by applying additional water. This water in excess of plant needs is called the leaching fraction. Salination from irrigation water is also greatly increased by poor drainage and use of saline water for irrigating agricultural crops. BluBio's™ microbial augmentation has achieved successful reduction of sodium to the 2000ppm levels. This represents the means to process challenging agricultural wastewater virtually in its entirety. Used together with our animal lagoon processing CleanBlu® can offer a viable, cost effective method to deliver much needed water to farming operations.
